Houmas House
40136 LA-942, Darrow, LA, 70725
On the National Register of Historic Places, Houmas House Plantation was among southern Louisiana’s most prominent sugarcane plantations, one part in the ocean-spanning sugar industry’s brutal history. Once home to 550 enslaved people, the house today is a living reminder of this dark chapter in American history.
The basics
Houmas House Plantation exists as a testament to the once-mighty American sugarcane industry and of the “sugar barons” who wielded great wealth and power over the region (and over the enslaved people who suffered backbreaking labor and dreadful conditions of life). Visitors can learn more about the landmark’s owners on a tour of the slave-built plantation house and its gardens, as well as discover how its fortunes changed in the latter half of the 19th century.
Houmas House features on a number of history-focused plantation tours which depart from New Orleans, some of which also include airboat rides and meals as part of a full-day itinerary.

- Houmas House is accessible to wheelchair users.
