POINT OF INTEREST

Houston Graffiti Building

2011 Leeland St, Houston, TX, 77003

The anchor to Houston’s Downtown Graffiti Park, where rotating displays of cutting-edge street art drape industrial structures, the Houston Graffiti Building is a living canvas for local and international graffiti and mural artists. The building brings vibrant color to the concrete of an otherwise gray area of East Downtown, drawing travelers interested in street art and culture—and social-media-ready photo ops.

The basics

The Houston Graffiti Building is free and open to the public—visiting is a matter of reaching the site and parking. The building and adjacent Downtown Graffiti Park comprise a square block at the corner of Leeland and Chartres streets. Murals and tagging scenes are scattered throughout the industrial neighborhood. You can see the street art in 30 minutes or less or take a tour that visits the area, downtown, and the Houston Museum District.

Things to know before you go

  • Watch for murals with Kobe Bryant and a McDonald's “astronaut.”

  • While it's a graffiti art space, respect for the artwork and the artists is encouraged—avoid touching or defacing any murals.

  • Houston is often hot and humid, so dress comfortably and stay hydrated.

  • Most of the art is either by Houston-based artists or Houston-themed.

  • Some of the street art may not be appropriate for young children

How to get there

The Houston Graffiti Building lies at the intersection of Leeland and Chartres streets in East Downtown Houston, within walking distance of the “We Love Houston” sign and Shell Energy Stadium. From Capitol Street downtown, you can walk in about 20 minutes or take the Nos. 40 or 41 METRO buses to Polk Street and Emanuel Street. Driving is fastest, and there’s plenty of street parking.

When to get there

The Houston Graffiti Building is a public space and free to visit year-round, though murals change frequently. To avoid peak crowds, visit in the morning and late afternoon; for the best light to capture mural photographs, visit just after sunrise or before sunset—also known as the “golden hour.”

Where to stop for food near the Houston Graffiti Building

There’s no contest where to stop for a bite or a beer near the Houston Graffiti building. A block away, the Leeland House serves creative drinks and all-day brunch. Drop by for caffeinated beverages like a honey lavender latte and a matcha latte with pistachio and boozy cocktails, like an espresso martini made with cold-brew coffee.
