The collections at the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens—or simply, the Huntington—were gifted by Henry E. Huntington, and its 120-acre (48.5-hectare) property offers plenty to do. During a visit, stroll the grounds, see paintings and decorative arts, and visit the library containing six million titles. Book advance tickets to this popular attraction and pick up a complimentary audio tour to learn along the way. A complete visit will include a stroll through the Chinese and Japanese garden and a meal or snack in the tea room, cafe, or coffee shop.
Things to know before you go
- Literature enthusiasts can admire the library, which contains a Gutenberg Bible and first-edition of Shakespeare, though most of the collection is only available to researchers.
- Art fans shouldn't miss the galleries, including the largest collection of 18th-century art in the Americas.

How to get there
Located in San Marino, California—just east of Los Angeles—the Huntington is most conveniently reached by car. From Los Angeles, take the 110 or I-210 freeways, and head toward Pasadena. The Huntington is located on Oxford Road, and offers free, on-site parking.
When to get there
For the best value, visit on the first Thursday of the month, when the Huntington offers complimentary admission with advance reservations. Otherwise, visit during the week to secure moderately priced tickets, and be prepared for crowds if you visit on Saturday or Sunday. Exploring the Art Galleries at the Huntington
Though it's tempting to relax in the sun-soaked gardens, it's worth heading inside to explore the Huntington's art collection. You can browse the Virginia Steele Scott Galleries of American Art and see European works spanning five centuries, including devotional pieces by Rogier van der Weyden and a Jean-Antoine Houdon sculpture.
