Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA)
Military Road, Kilmainham, Dublin, D08 FW31
Founded in 1990, the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) is located in a former royal hospital on 48 acres of land with a formal garden and medieval cemetery. In addition to its substantial collection of artworks, special exhibitions, educational programs, lectures, workshops, and studio tours draw visitors to the museum.
The Basics
Most of the artworks on display at the Irish Museum of Modern Art were created from 1940 to the present. Visitors can wander through the galleries at their own pace or join a guided tour. The museum is home to more than 3,500 pieces by Irish and international artists. General admission is free but some special exhibitions do require an entry fee. Dublin Pass holders receive a discount at the on-site café and bookshop.
Things to Know Before You Go
The Irish Museum of Modern Art is a must-see attraction for travelers interested in contemporary art, design, and modern Irish culture.
The museum and grounds are wheelchair accessible.
Facilities on-site include lockers for storage, a café overlooking the courtyard, and a shop with souvenirs, books, and prints.
Free Wi-Fi is available in the main building.
How to Get There
The museum is located in Dublin 8, a 30-minute walk from the city center. Visitors can also take the Luas tram; ride the Red Line to Heuston Station and the museum is an 8-minute walk away. The museum is also a stop on the hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus.
When to Get There
Visit IMMA any day of the week except Monday, when the museum is closed (with the exception of Bank Holiday Mondays). Hours vary depending on the day of the week, but the museum is usually open from 12pm to 5pm. Summer is the busiest season. Arrive early on a weekday for the quietest experience in the galleries.
Supporting the Irish Arts
The former stables on the grounds are now artists’ studios. Contemporary artists apply for residencies on an annual basis and are given space to work. Check out the museum’s calendar for studio tours to see artists at work.
