Jesup Memorial Library

Bar Harbor, ME

You can learn an awful lot from a town’s local library. Bar Harbor’s Jesup Memorial Library is a gem from the early 20th century, built in the style of classic academic libraries. Come here on a tour, or visit to admire the space, grab some peace and quiet, or spend a simple afternoon among the books, maps, and Maine history.

The basics

A National Historic Landmark, the library was built in 1911 in the colonial revival style, and retains its architectural details to this day. Think multiple spiral staircases, oak woodwork, hanging lamps, arches, and some secret iconography on the walls and ceiling, if you can find it. Of course, this is a functioning library, so if you visit, be sure to use your library manners.

The library is one of several Bar Harbor buildings that welcomes the public to wander in on tours. Again, just be mindful of the patrons and staff, and explore with your eyes and ears—not your voice.

Things to know before you go

  • Head to the top floor for a pretty aerial view of the library.
  • The library often has a large selection of Maine-devoted books, plus a staff of locals who can likely answer your Bar Harbor questions.
  • The library is currently undergoing an expansion; construction may or may not impact your experience.

How to get there

The Jesup Memorial Library is just a short block from Bar Harbor’s Village Green. If you’re in the area—which you likely will be—simply walk on over. The library does have a small parking lot, if you have a car. Otherwise, look for street parking, or opt for a rideshare or taxi.

When to get there

The Jesup Memorial Library is typically open Tuesday to Saturday, from mid-morning to late afternoon, with closures on major holidays. Check the library’s website to catch special events, such as performances, workshops, and lectures.

Local favorites

You can find more local spots on self-guided audio tours, too.
