POINT OF INTEREST

Kahlenberg

Vienna, Austria, 1190

Kahlenberg is a 484-meter (1588-foot) high mountain in Vienna’s 19th district. Its historical importance dates back to 1683, when an army led by Polish King Sobiesky marched through the mountain and freed Vienna from its Turkish occupation. Today, visitors and locals visit this summit in the Vienna Woods to see the viewing tower, panoramic terrace, pilgrimage church, cafe, and restaurant.

The basics

Going to the top of the Kahlenberg is a must when visiting Vienna if only to drive to the top, snap a photo of the Vienna cityscape, and have a coffee before returning to the bottom. The viewing tower, built in the 1880s, has a panoramic viewing terrace, though you can still enjoy great views from the windows of the restaurant and cafe.

Things to know before you go

  • The trail takes an average of four hours on foot.

  • The cafe menu includes Viennese dishes like Goulash soup and strudel.

  • The church features a black Madonna and a tomb where Camaldolese monks are laid to rest.

How to get there

There are two ways to get to the top of Kahlenberg: on wheels or foot. Some people choose the hiking trails, while others save their energy and drive to the top. Take the D train to Nussdorf and start your ascent. Without a private car, you can also take the 38A bus from Heiligenstadt towards Leopoldsberg and get off at Kahlenberg station.

When to get there

The best days to visit the top of the Kahlenberg are usually its busiest days: when the clear sky showcases views all the way to the Schneeberg mountain. You may find it less crowded during the weekday afternoons. From a hiking perspective, the trail sees a significantly smaller volume of people. When hiking, plan for late spring or early fall visits to avoid any especially hot and humid summer weather.

Stop for ropes and wine on Kahlenberg

The hike up to the summit of Kahlenberg need not be your goal. There are plenty of sites on the mountainside worthy of resting your feet. The Waldseilpark Kahlenberg is a forest adventure park with a ropes course, while wine bars like Der Hirt offer dazzling views, classic Austrian dishes, and local wines.
