Kamerlengo Castle
Obala bana Berislavića, Trogir, Croatia, 21220
The high walls of Kamerlengo Castle watch over the boats and yachts that line Trogir’s scenic waterfront. This 15th-century Venetian fortress, once used to defend the city, now serves tourists by providing them with unparalleled views across the orange rooftops of this historic town on Croatia's Dalmatian coast.
The basics
Visits to Kamerlengo Castle are mostly about climbing onto the fortress walls for views of Trogir’s historical center and the nearby coast. Most visitors spend about 30 minutes here, which is enough, as the main courtyard area is the highlight. Kamerlengo Castle is an iconic part of Trogir’s waterfront and provides excellent views, so it is a common stop for day tours to Trogir and walking tours that explore the town’s historical center.
Things to know before you go
People visiting with wheelchairs are not able to access the fortress, as access to the ramparts is only possible up a large staircase.
There are restrooms inside the fortress courtyard, which are helpful as there are no public restrooms on the island.
Admission tickets are cash only.
There are no information displays within the fortress, so if you're looking for historical information, you’ll need to research the fortress beforehand or get a guide.
How to get there
Kamerlengo Castle is situated within the Old Town of Trogir, at the western end of the Trogir Riva promenade. You can walk there if you’re already in the historical center or parked outside it. Otherwise, take a bus to Trogir Bus Station from the mainland or to the bus stops on either side of the Čiovo bridge when coming from Čiovo island.
When to get there
You can visit Kamerlengo Castle daily, with the fortress open from morning to night. Expect Kamerlengo Castle to be busy in summer, much like the rest of Trogir. Going on a weekday when it opens is the best time to beat the crowds. The castle gets busy in summer because it’s often used to host events, which can be fun to see.
Historical landmarks of Trogir
While Kamerlengo Castle may be Trogir’s most significant historical attraction, it’s certainly not alone. Across a football pitch from the castle, you’ll find St. Mark’s Tower, a lone tower that once was attached to the castle. Deep in the maze of streets of Trogir’s old town, is Trogir Cathedral, which was built in the 13th century and serves as the other major landmark of the town.
