The basics

Once a furniture factory, Kunst Haus Wien—along with the neighboring apartment building—was designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The wild facade reflects the spirit of the art displayed within. The museum is one of the most popular in Vienna so book your ticket in advance to avoid a long wait to get in. Things to know before you go

• The playful facade of the Kunst Haus Wien is one of the most photographed in Vienna, so be sure to bring your camera.
• Opt for an audio guide (extra charge) for insights into the Hundertwasser’s works, including paintings, graphics, tapestry, and architecture.
• The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions of modern and contemporary art; check the schedule on the museum website.
• There is a café and gift shop on the museum’s ground floor.
• The museum is accessible to wheelchairs via a side entrance to the left of the main entrance on the ground floor.

How to get there

Kunst Haus Wien is located on Untere Weissgerberstrasse in the center of Vienna, and can be reached by metro (U4 to Wien-Mitte or Schwedenplatz, U3 to Wien-Mitte or Rochusgasse, U1 to Schwedenplatz or Praterstern, or U2 to Praterstern) or tram lines 1 or 0 to Radetzkyplatz.

When to get there

Kunst Haus Wien is open daily but can be crowded on weekends and holidays. Visit on a weekday morning to take in the collection in relative peace. Even if you are not planning on taking in the collection, stop by during the day when there is ample light to admire the uniquely striking facade.

Works to Look for at the Kunst Haus Wien

Be sure to pause in front of Hundertwasser's intensely colorful early works like “The Miraculous Drought” and “Land of Men, Trees, Birds and Ships”, as well as later pieces like “Bleeding Houses,” the Krka waterfall tapestry, and a model of an ideal city.
