POINT OF INTEREST

La Ronde

22 Chem. Macdonald, Montréal, Canada

Montreal’s La Ronde amusement park (operated by Six Flags) is one of the largest in Canada, and the largest in the country’s east. It offers everything from toddler-friendly rides and a huge Ferris wheel to 10 roller coasters and even a thrilling human catapult. With more than 40 rides, there should be something for everyone at this seasonal favorite.

The basics

Originally built in the 1960s for Expo ’67, La Ronde remains a popular seasonal attraction in Montreal. Its central-city location means it’s easy to reach, whether you’re going with kids or friends. Travelers typically visit independently to enjoy the rides at a leisurely pace. There are shops and plenty of places to eat, too. As it’s located on St. Helen’s Island in the St. Lawrence River, you can combine a few hours here with a stroll around Parc Jean-Drapeau, which is on the same island.

Things to know before you go

  • Tickets can only be purchased online, so make sure to do this in advance.

  • Some minimum height restrictions apply, which vary by ride.

  • Most rides are included in the entry ticket, but some have an extra fee, such as the Catapulte.

  • La Ronde aims to make rides accessible to travelers with disabilities. Disabled visitors pay the regular ticket price, but an accompanying attendant receives free entry.

How to get there

La Ronde is on St. Helen’s Island in the St. Lawrence River. There is parking on the island, but this may be limited, so taking public transportation is recommended. The nearest subway stations are Jean-Drapeau, south of La Ronde on St. Helen’s Island, as well as Papineau and Longueuil–Université-de-Sherbrooke, on the western and eastern banks of the river, respectively. Shuttles run to La Ronde from the Jean-Drapeau and Papineau subway stations.

When to get there

La Ronde is only open between May and October, when the weather is most pleasant in Montreal. Check the calendar, as its schedule may change with the seasons, and be sure to purchase tickets in advance. Various food, entertainment, and holiday events and festivals are held during open season, particularly in the summer, including L'International des Feux Loto-Québec, an annual fireworks festival through July.

Check out Parc Jean-Drapeau

Just south of La Ronde on St. Helen’s Island you’ll find Parc Jean-Drapeau, another family-friendly place with many things to see and do. It’s also a good alternative if you’re visiting Montreal during La Ronde’s off-season. The Biosphere is a highlight, both for the stunning steel dome of the exterior and for its Environment Museum inside.
