The Lee-Fendall House in Old Town Alexandria has been home to the Lee family, generations of enslaved and free African-Americans, convalescing Union soldiers in the Civil War, a liquor purveyor, and labor leader John L. Lewis. Today, it’s a museum that looks at life in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The garden features medicinal plants and roses.

How to get there
Located on Oronoco Street in Alexandria, the Lee-Fendall House Museum and Garden is within walking distance of the Braddock Road and King Street Metro stations. Several bus routes also serve the location, with stops nearby. The museum is a few blocks north of the King Street thoroughfare and west of the waterfront.
When to get there
The Lee-Fendall House Museum and Garden is open Wednesday–Saturday, mid-morning to mid-afternoon, and Sunday afternoons. It’s closed on major holidays. Guided tours are offered on the hour starting at 10am. They last about 45 minutes. Check the calendar of events for information on specialty tours and other happenings. The house is occasionally closed for special events and private functions.
Carlyle House Historic Park
The city's founder, John Carlyle, built this 18th-century historic house in Old Town Alexandria. Now a museum, it offers visitors a look at life in this period with a collection of garments, furnishings, artifacts, and more. The house is sometimes included on haunted tours because rumors have it that you can spot ghosts in the yard. The half-mile (0.8-kilometer) walk between the Lee-Fendall House and Carlyle House takes about 10 minutes.
