Limmatquai
Limmatquai, Zurich, Switzerland, 8001
Running along the east bank of the Limmat River, Limmatquai is a popular street for visitors, home to many restaurants, hotels, and shops. You will most likely find yourself somewhere on the street during your exploration of Old Town (Altstadt).
The basics
Limmatquai stretches through the historical core of Zurich, making it nearly impossible to miss during a day of sightseeing. Many walking tours include Limmatquai, and attractions such as the Grossmünster and Town Hall (Rathaus) can be found on or just off the street. Looking across the river, you can see Fraumünster Church and Lindenhof.
Things to know before you go
- Limmatquai is just over half a mile (1 kilometer) long, stretching from the Bahnhofbrücke to Quaibrücke bridges.
- Central Zurich is very walkable, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
- The street is mostly closed to vehicles, but watch out for the trams that run along it.
How to get there
Limmatquai is within walking distance of Niederdorf, Bahnofstrasse, and Lake Zurich. Many trams also pass through, stopping at Central, Rathaus, and Bellevue stations.
When to get there
The street is busy most of the day. Go in the morning to enjoy a more tranquil atmosphere on the water before some of the businesses open or enjoy an evening walk to admire the lights of the city. Restaurants and shops have varying hours, but the street is particularly lively during dinnertime.
Seefeld
If you make it to the bottom end of Limmatquai, where the river meets Lake Zurich, keep going south to reach the residential area of Seefeld on the lake’s eastern shore. Visitors who venture out of Old Town and into Seefeld will find a waterfront promenade where you can relax and enjoy lakefront views.
