Little Island
New York City, NY
Perched above the Hudson River and connected to the mainland via two bridges, Little Island is one of New York City’s most unique park spaces. On the Manhattan side of the river, this pier-like structure features a waterfront amphitheater, gardens, play equipment, and a food kiosk selling drinks and snacks.
The basics
There are plenty of ways to experience Little Island, whether you’re attending a show or simply enjoying a stroll through its gardens. The man-made island features on many Meatpacking District tours, some of which also visit the High Line, as well as on architecture-specific tours. You can also stop by on a food tour that visits Little Island along with nearby Pier 57 and Chelsea Market. Self-guided tours are also a good option if you want flexibility. Little Island offers two audio tours of its own, which are available via its website: one focuses on history and the other on landscape architecture. If you’re interested in the island’s design, take a Hudson River boat tour to get a closer look at the flower-like supports (known as tulips) that keep it afloat.
Things to know before you go
Little Island is a must-visit for nature lovers and those interested in garden design or structural engineering. Bicycles, drones, and dogs (except for service animals) are not allowed in the park. There is no fee to visit Little Island, although performances at The Amph are ticketed. Little Island is fully accessible, with paved pathways, reservable wheelchair spaces at The Amph, ADA restrooms, and two wheelchairs available for loan—seek out park staff if you’d like to borrow one.
How to get there
There are two bridges that lead to Little Island: the South Bridge, close to 13th Street, or the North Bridge near 14th street. You’ll need to cross the West Side Highway via pedestrian crosswalks located at either 14th Street or 13th Street. If traveling by subway, the nearest station is 14th Street/8th Avenue, served by the A, C, E, and L trains. Alternatively, SBS buses M11, M12, and M14D stop at the corner of 14th Street and 10th Avenue.
When to get there
Little Island is open daily from early in the morning until late at night. The quietest months to visit the park are between November and March, while April to October typically attracts more crowds (and better weather). The main performance season at The Amph runs from June until September, while most events at The Glade take place in July and August.
Walking the High Line
Many people who visit Little Island also pay a visit to the High Line, a 1.45-mile (2.33-kilometer) park built on an old viaduct. The High Line stretches from the Meatpacking District to just north of Chelsea and allows walkers to stroll amongst greenery and above street level while taking in views of the city and the Hudson River.
