POINT OF INTEREST

Little Theatre of Alexandria

Founded in 1934, the Little Theatre of Alexandria has hosted hundreds of popular productions and welcomed notable figures such as Presidents Harry S. Truman and George W. Bush as audience members. In addition to an ambitious yearly show schedule, the 90-year-old community theater also offers performing arts classes for all ages and a summer camp program for kids.

The basics

Since its inception, the Little Theatre of Alexandria has produced over 450 productions, including various musicals, dramas, and comedies—from “Send Me No Flowers” to “Into the Woods.” You can experience this historic landmark when you purchase tickets to one of the shows offered throughout the year, including an annual performance of “A Christmas Carol” during the holiday season. Tickets can be purchased at the box office, online, or by phone.

Things to know before you go

A wheelchair-accessible ramp is located at the front of the building. Two wheelchair-accessible spaces and three transfer seats with adjustable armrests are available per performance. Hearing-assist headsets are available at the box office for each performance. Because of the theater's intimate nature, visitors say there’s not a bad seat in the house. Before the show, dine at one of the many restaurants along the waterfront or King Street.

How to get there

Located in Old Town Alexandria, the Little Theatre of Alexandria is easily accessible by public transit, including DASH buses and the free King Street Trolley. It’s about a 20–25-minute walk from the King Street Metro and Amtrak stations and is within walking distance of the waterfront and the ferry terminal.

When to get there

The Little Theatre of Alexandria's box office is open from 1–5pm Monday through Friday. On performance dates, it’s open Thursday through Saturday, 7-8:30pm; Saturday afternoons, 1-3pm; and Sunday matinees, 1-2:30pm. It is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. The theater performs “A Christmas Carol” every holiday season.

Torpedo Factory Art Center

Located along the waterfront in Alexandria, the Torpedo Factory Art Center is housed in a converted munitions plant and includes working artists’ open studios, which visitors can explore. The Target Gallery is the center’s contemporary space that hosts regular exhibitions. It’s also home to the Alexandria Archaeology Museum.
