POINT OF INTEREST

Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)

5905 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA, 90036

The largest art museum in the western United States, the size of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is matched by the breadth of its collection. Home to more than 120,000 objects dating from antiquity to the present, representing every part of the world, the museum’s collection encompasses nearly the entire history of art.

The basics

LACMA is mainly known for the strength of its collection of Asian art, including a rich collection of items from Korea, Japan, and India; Latin American art, from pre-Columbian works to pieces by modern masters including Frida Kahlo; and Islamic art, of which it holds one of the most significant collections in the world. As well as displaying its permanent collection (temporarily closed as it will be moved to LACMA’s new building in late 2024), the museum hosts rotating temporary exhibitions featuring artworks drawn from the collection. Free docent-led guided tours are offered on most days.

LACMA is closed on Wednesdays, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. The museum recommends visitors arrive 10–15 minutes before their scheduled entry time and requires arrival no later than 15 minutes after the scheduled entry time (tickets are non-refundable for latecomers).

Art Classes

For visitors inspired by the artwork on view, LACMA offers a variety of hands-on art classes. Children, teens, and adults can participate in painting, printmaking, and collage classes led by creative and professional teaching artists.
