Los Angeles Montana Avenue
Santa Monica, CA
Los Angeles has many famous streets, but Montana Avenue is the cool cousin of Sunset Avenue to Mulholland Drive. Tree-lined and full of boutique shops, cafés, salons, and restaurants, the avenue runs from Ocean Street to Brentwood. Stop by after visiting downtown to eat, shop, and be seen in the heart of Santa Monica.
The basics
Most shops and walkable areas are off Ocean Avenue on the west side of Santa Monica. When the weather is nice—often in Southern California—spend the morning exploring downtown San Monica, the Santa Monica Pier, and Santa Monica State Beach. Then, walk north to Montana Boulevard when you’re ready to grab a bite or dive into shopping. The main section stretches about 10 blocks east, after which the boulevard becomes residential.
Things to know before you go
Montana Avenue is a known celebrity hangout—have your camera handy for sightings.
Montana Avenue is a pedestrian-friendly area with outdoor seating areas at many eateries.
Check local sources for events, as the street occasionally hosts sidewalk sales, art walks, and community gatherings.
How to get there
The street is in the heart of Santa Monica and is easy to reach on foot. From Santa Monica Boulevard downtown, walk north on Lincoln Street six blocks to Montana. You can also take the scenic route from the Santa Monica Pier along Ocean Avenue. On public transport, you can take the Big Blue Bus route 41 from Santa Monica Boulevard.
When to get there
Though there isn't a bad time to explore Montana Avenue, visit during the week or outside peak shopping hours—mornings and evenings—to enjoy wandering with fewer crowds and better parking. To experience something different, visit during Christmas, when the street lights up with live music and carolers during the annual Holiday Walk.
What to do in downtown Santa Monica
Just south of Montana Boulevard, Ocean Avenue runs along Santa Monica State Beach to Downtown Santa Monica. The area is a high-end shopping district, but there are more things to do than retail therapy. The family-friendly Santa Monica Pier has a Ferris wheel and aquarium. The California Heritage Museum, Museum of Flying, and the Bergamot Station Arts Center are excellent indoor options, while Palisades Park and Tongva Park are great for staying in the sunshine.
