MIMMA (Museo Interactivo de la Música)
Calle Beatas 15, Malaga, Andalucia, 29008
Tucked down a narrow lane in Malaga, the MIMMA Interactive Museum of Music (Museo Interactivo de la Música) presents one of Europe’s largest collections of musical instruments in an immersive and interactive way. You can view the instruments, discover their origins, and can even play select items to experience their tactile beauty and sounds first-hand.
The basics
Occupying an elegant 18th-century palace, the MIMMA boasts a 400–strong permanent collection of instruments. See avant-garde installations; view more than 1,000 other objects; trace instruments’ roles across various cultures; and enjoy numerous interactive experiences. The museum also hosts regular live flamenco shows and kids’ musical workshops. You can pre-book tickets online or buy them at the door before exploring the museum independently. Some Malaga hop-on hop-off bus tours stop nearby, and select hop-on hop-off tickets include museum entry.
Things to know before you go
The MIMMA will appeal to musicians and music-lovers, and is recommended for kids who love interactive displays.
The museum is wheelchair- and stroller-accessible.
Visitors pay extra for the flamenco shows and kids’ musical workshops.
Most of the displays are captioned in Spanish and English.
On-site amenities include restrooms and a shop.
How to get there
The museum occupies the Palacio del Conde de Navas at 15, Calle Beatas in pedestrianized old Malaga, so is only accessible on foot. The nearest metro station is Atarazanas, about a 15-minute walk away. Numerous bus routes (including 1-4, 6-11, 30-38) and some hop-on hop-off buses stop close by. Driving isn’t recommended, but you’ll find parking garages at Calle Granados and Tejon y Rodriguez.
When to get there
The MIMMA is typically open daily, with reduced hours on Mondays. Normal opening times in June-September are mid-morning to mid-afternoon on Mondays, and mid-morning to early evening on Tuesday-Sunday. The rest of the year sees doors open from 10am-4pm Mondays and 10am-7pm Tuesday-Saturday. To avoid crowds, aim to visit outside of peak season and during weekdays when the museum is quieter. Arriving near opening or closing time is best.
Things not to miss at the MIMMA
The MIMMA’S interactive approach comes to the fore in its ‘Please Play’ spaces. Here, you step inside soundproofed rooms to play a choice of instruments. Pick up a violin, cello, guitar, or another more obscure item and experiment with its strings or sounds guided by a virtual teacher—kids especially will love the experience.
