Moogseum
Asheville, NC
Robert Moog invented the Moog synthesizer in 1964, and it’s since been adopted by bands from the Beatles to ABBA to Black Sabbath to MGMT. Although the Moogseum is not affiliated with Robert’s company, Moog Music, it does celebrate the legacy of his invention and the history of synthesizers. This interactive museum has Moog synthesizers and theremins available for guests to play.
The basics
The Moogseum is unlike any other musical museum or gallery in North Carolina, focusing solely on synthesizers. It’s an interactive, multi-sensory space that science, music, and history lovers will enjoy. The museum also touches on Robert Moog’s years spent in Asheville.
Things to know before you go
- Photos and videos are not permitted.
- Although the museum is ADA compliant, non-assistive pets are not permitted.
- Many exhibits are interactive and family-friendly, but this exhibit space is not a children’s museum.
How to get there
The Moogseum is at 56 Broadway Street in downtown Asheville. The N1 and N2 bus routes stop on the adjacent blocks. If you’re driving, the museum is right off Interstate 240, taking Broadway (Highway 25) south for 2 blocks. It’s also within walking distance of everything in Asheville’s downtown core, including hotels and Grove Arcade.
When to get there
The museum is open daily from late morning to very early evening, with the exception of major holidays. You won’t need to rush to fit in a visit—most people spend less than an hour checking out the collection—but you will need to allow a few extra minutes to find downtown parking, since there’s no parking lot on-site.
See live music around Asheville
Asheville’s creative culture fosters an excellent local music scene. To catch a show, check the events calendar at The Orange Peel, Rabbit Rabbit, and Boiler Room. Each of these venues features both national touring acts and local artists; all are also within walking distance of the Moogmuseum.
