POINT OF INTEREST

Museum of Making Music

5790 Armada Drive, Carlsbad, San Diego, CA, 92008

You’ve certainly seen museums dedicated to music, artists, and entertainers, but this is an entire showcase dedicated to the making of music—aka musical instruments, musical trends, musical discoveries, and more. Visitors will explore 500-plus musical instruments (some hands-on), learning all about the evolution and creation of sound. Concerts and live performances fill the museum calendar, too.

The basics

Tucked between LEGOLANDs and the Carlsbad Premium Outlets, the Museum of Making Music believes its eponymous act is essential to daily living, asking little of its guests but to revel in the joy of making music (and, of course, pay the admission fee). Beyond public-facing exhibits and live events, the museum runs a robust educational program and offers opportunities for locals to hone their musical talents.

Things to know before you go

  • Special exhibits pop up roughly twice a year, keeping things fresh.

  • Bring the kids—there are several “sit n’ play” areas (instruments included).

  • NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) members get free admission.

How to get there

Most visitors will arrive at the Museum of Making Music in their vehicle—onsite parking is free, and the lot is reserved for museum visitors only. That said, it’s in the heart of everything; if you’re exploring LEGOLAND, SEA LIFE Aquarium, Fun Town, or the Carlsbad Premium Outlets, just walk on over. Rideshares and taxis will be available, too.

When to get there

The Museum of Making Music is typically open year-round and every day of the week except Mondays (in addition to holiday closures, of course). Apart from school field trips, it’s rarely elbow-to-elbow in the exhibits, though come closer to closing time if you don’t want to risk running into a dozen 12-year-olds.

A little something for everyone

Making music is more of an interdisciplinary venture than it may appear—you’ll explore history (music from the 19th century to the present day), engineering (how music is produced and recorded), craftsmanship (instrument design), culture (the evolution of American sound), and more. You’ll also stroll along some 500 vintage instruments, a leisurely journey through time.
