Neue Galerie New York
1048 5th Ave., Manhattan, New York City, NY, 10028
Located along New York City’s Museum Mile, the Neue Galerie New York is dedicated entirely to Austrian and German art and design from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Housed in an elegant Gilded Age beaux arts mansion that once belonged to the Vanderbilts, the museum’s collection includes paintings, sculptures, photos, drawings, and decorative arts.
The Basics
Explore the museum’s galleries on the second and third floors. The second floor is devoted to Austrian art, and includes works by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. The third floor is focused on German art and includes works by Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. Don’t miss Gustav Klimt’s portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (Lady in Gold). Either of its two cafes—Café Sabarsky and Café Fledermaus—serving elevated Viennese fare, are worth a visit.
Opt for a guided visit to ensure you see the highlights. Some guided tours combine a visit to the Neue Galerie with stops at other New York City attractions, such as Central Park, Rockefeller Center, and Times Square. Or visit on a hop-on hop-off bus tour and explore the Neue Galerie at your leisure.
