New National Gallery (Neue Nationalgalerie)
Potsdamer Straße 50, Berlin, Germany, 10785
The New National Gallery is a modern art mecca that exhibits the work of innovative visionaries of the early 20th century—we’re talking Dali, Picasso, and Kandinsky. It's also a hot spot for architecture fans, as it was the last project Ludwig Mies van der Rohe worked on before he passed away.
The basics
The New National Gallery is a stop on hop-on hop-off bus tours that loop around Berlin’s key landmarks in a day. You can enjoy discounted entry with a special museum pass, which grants you access to 30 other Berlin highlights—including the DDR Museum, the Berlin Dungeon, and The Wall Museum. For convenient private transport, visit the gallery on a private taxi tour with a customizable itinerary.
Things to know before you go
The museum is wheelchair-accessible and the barrier-free entrance is on the left side of the building on Reichpietschufer.
There is usually free admission to the New National Gallery every Thursday from 4–8pm.
There’s an on-site souvenir shop and a café.
How to get there
The quickest way to reach the New National Gallery is by hopping on the U2 U-Bahn line, or the S1, S2, or S25 S-Bahn lines to Potsdamer Platz. It’s then only a short walk to the entrance on Potsdamer Strasse 50. If you prefer to travel by bus, then you can get the M48, M85, or N2 to the Kulturforum.
When to get there
The New National Gallery is open throughout the year but may be closed during public holidays, so it’s best to check the schedule before visiting. Usually, it’s closed on Mondays and has later opening hours on Thursdays. If you want to avoid the crowds, then come mid-morning during the week, or after 4pm if you want a better chance of avoiding school groups.
The best art museums in Berlin
Art lovers can spend several days exploring the museums and street art of Berlin. To see 13th to 18th-century masterpieces by Botticelli, Rembrandt, and Durer, head to the Portrait Gallery (Gemaldegalerie). For sculptures and objects, the Museum of Decorative Arts is a good choice, while the Contemporary Fine Arts has a diverse range of both well-known and emerging artists. Finally—don’t miss the East Side Gallery for international street art on the Berlin Wall remnants.
