New York City Koreatown
New York City, NY
Though it comprises just a small section of Midtown Manhattan, New York’s Koreatown is one of the city’s most dynamic and lively neighborhoods. A particularly popular destination in the evening, when crowds flock to its Korean barbecue restaurants or hit its late-night karaoke parlors, Koreatown is an ideal place to spend a memorable night out in the Big Apple.
The basics
Manhattan’s Chinatown is renowned around the world, but its comparatively smaller Koreatown—also known as K-town—is less known to outside visitors. But that’s beginning to change, thanks to the enclave’s hundreds of businesses, growing Korean community, and burgeoning reputation for late-night revelry.
If you're a first-time visitor, head to 32nd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues; nicknamed Korea Way, it's the heart of the district, and home to many of its most popular restaurants and businesses. For the ultimate introduction, head to Food Gallery 32, a multi-level food court, or visit Korean barbecue favorites like Jongro. Alternatively, explore on a New York tour—a range of walking and hop-on hop-off bus tours make it easy to explore the area.
Things to know before you go
Many of Koreatown’s restaurants, including its barbecue staples, cater well to larger parties, so it’s a great option for groups.
When visiting Koreatown, look up: Many businesses are located multiple floors up in its high-rises, and karaoke parlors are often a floor above restaurants.
K-Town may be best known for its dining and nightlife, but it’s also worth visiting its popular K-beauty emporiums, bookstores, and other daytime favorites.
If you plan to visit on the weekend, be sure to reserve karaoke rooms and restaurants in advance, as they can book up early.
How to get there
New York City’s Koreatown is located roughly from Fifth Avenue to Sixth Avenue and from 31st Street to 33rd Streets, although businesses are increasingly expanding to nearby blocks. To get there via public transportation, take the B, D, F, M, N, Q, R, and W trains to 34 St-Herald Square, or take PATH trains to 33rd Street station. Taxis and rideshare services offer another easy option.
When to get there
There’s never a bad time to be in Koreatown, but the neighborhood generally comes into its own as the sun starts to set. Many of its most popular restaurants, bars, and karaoke haunts are open into the wee hours, and it’s worth swinging by at primetime to soak up the energy.
The Empire State Building
New York City’s Koreatown isn’t just a worthy destination in itself—it’s also located near many of Manhattan’s most iconic landmarks. Case in point: The Empire State Building, located at 33rd Street and 5th Avenue, is on the neighborhood’s outer edge; it’s worth booking tickets to its observation deck to accompany your visit.
