Old Stone House
3051 M St. NW, Washington DC, Washington DC, USA, 20007
Dating back to around 1766, the Old Stone House is the oldest structure in DC that still sits on its original foundation—and it hasn’t changed a whole lot since it was built. Today it's managed by the National Parks Service and features a gift shop and exhibits about American history and the history of the house.
The basics
Both the Old Stone House and its Colonial Revival Garden make a worthwhile stop in Georgetown. Park rangers are on hand to provide information and answer questions, and visitors can check out interpretive exhibits or explore the kitchen and other rooms, all furnished as they would have been back in the late 1700s. Many Georgetown walking tours, including architecture-focused tours and ghost tours, stop at the Old Stone House.
Things to know before you go
The Old Stone House is a must-visit for fans of history and architecture.
There is no parking at the Old Stone House, but street and garage parking is available nearby.
The ground floor of the Old Stone House is not very wheelchair-friendly, and the upstairs floors are only accessible via a winding staircase.
How to get there
The Old Stone House is located on M Street NW in Washington DC's Georgetown neighborhood, at the intersection with Thomas Jefferson Street NW. It's about a 10-minute drive or 30-minute walk from the White House and about a 15-minute drive from the US Capitol. Bus 22 and the GT-US (Georgetown) bus stop just outside.
When to get there
The Old Stone House is open Friday through Monday, except on select public holidays (New Year's Day, Juneteenth, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas). Weekends tend to be busier than weekdays. For the fewest crowds, your best bet is to come on a Monday morning, right when Old Stone House opens. Note that the grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset.
Georgetown
After your Old Stone House visit, consider sticking around the historic Georgetown neighborhood for a bit of sightseeing. Popular attractions include the famed Georgetown University and the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal. There are also tons of great restaurants in the neighborhood, along with loads of brand-name and boutique shops, particularly along M Street and Wisconsin Avenue.
