Ordrupgaard Museum

Vilvordevej 110, Charlottenlund, 2920

The Ordrupgaard Museum houses one of the most considerable collections of Danish and French modern art in northern Europe. Take a day trip from Copenhagen to explore the galleries and special exhibitions, the contemporary extension designed by Zaha Hadid, the sculpture park (Art Park Ordrupgaard), and the Finn Juhl House.

The basics

Fans of art, architecture, and design will find much to admire in this unique estate-turned-museum. Between 1892 and 1916, Willhelm Hansen and his wife amassed an extensive collection of art, which they willed along with their villa to the Danish state.

Many visitors spend most of the day at the complex, now known as the Ordrupgaard Museum. It boasts striking architectural additions by Zaha Hadid and Snøhetta, the preserved home of renowned architect/designer Finn Juhl and its collection of modernist art, and expansive grounds with a park and wooded areas.

Things to know before you go

  • Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather to explore the outdoor sculpture garden and park.

  • The on-site restaurant is ideal for breaking up your visit with lunch or a snack.

  • The museum offers private guided tours, which must be booked via the website at least 10 days in advance.

  • The museum complex is accessible, and wheelchairs and walkers are available on a first come, first served basis at the entrance.

How to get there

The Ordrupgaard Museum is located in the far northern reaches of Copenhagen, about a 20-minute drive from the city center. There is no public transportation directly to the museum—the nearest bus stop is about a mile (2 km) away—so the easiest way to get there is by car or taxi.

When to get there

The museum complex is closed on Mondays, though the surrounding grounds are open daily. If you want to focus on the interior galleries, you can visit in any weather, but stop by on a dry, mild day for the best experience exploring the extensive outdoor areas and sculpture park.

A cheat sheet for visiting the Ordrupgaard Museum

With its vast and varied collection, Ordrupgaard can be daunting to explore for the first time. Begin with the top works, including paintings by Gauguin, Manet, Monet, and Renoir. Then, dedicate time to exploring works from the “Danish Golden Age” by artists like JT Lundbye and Vilhelm Hammershøi. Finally, lovers of Danish design will want to explore the Finn Juhl House, where the designer and architect lived among his pieces of Modernist art.
