Oscar Wilde Statue
Merrion Square W, Dublin, Ireland
Irish playwright and poet Oscar Wilde is commemorated in the heart of Dublin with this sculpture, depicting the writer lounging on a boulder within the scenic environment of a public park called Merrion Square—across the street from his childhood home. The statue includes inscriptions of his poems, and is one of several landmarks dedicated to the city’s literary heritage, including the nearby Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI).
The basics
Along with statues of other famous Irish writers such as James Joyce and George Bernard Shaw, the Oscar Wilde Statue is part of Dublin’s “Talking Statues” program. Scan the statue’s QR code and receive a phone call to listen to an homage to Wilde written by Irish novelist John Banville and narrated by Irish actor Andrew Scott. Most visitors spend about 15 minutes at this statue, during a stroll along the blooming paths of Merrion Square or as part of a larger Dublin walking tour.
