Palais Auersperg
Auerspergstrasse 1, Vienna, Vienna, 1080
One of the many imperial residences built across Vienna in the 17th and 18th centuries, Palais Auersperg stands apart as the city’s oldest Baroque palace, dating from 1710. Its ornate halls once hosted Vienna’s most outstanding musicians for royal balls and weddings, and today it remains one of Vienna's most lavish concert venues.
The basics
Classical music fans flock to Palais Auersperg to take in the Mozart and Strauss concerts performed year-round in its historic hall, while the annual highlight is the white-tie New Year’s Eve extravaganza (Silvester Gala) with orchestra-backed dancing of waltzes and polkas. Purchase tickets for the regularly scheduled concerts and special events well in advance, as this spectacular hall that once hosted Mozart, Haydn, and Gluck sells out quickly. The palace sits near the Schönbrunn Palace and City Hall, so pause here on a walking or cycling tour of the city to admire its elaborate white facade.
Things to know before you go
Tickets to the classical music concerts, balls, and other events held at Palais Auersperg must be purchased beforehand.
Though the venue is elegant, the concert dress code is casual.
The evening concerts of the Vienna Residence Orchestra are held daily and last about an hour, covering the most famous works by Mozart and Strauss.
The palace is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers via the entrance at Lerchenfelderstrasse 2.
How to get there
Set in central Vienna, Palais Auersperg is a quick walk from famous sights like the Town Hall and Museumsquartier. From other areas of the city, take metro lines U2 or U3 to the Volkstheater stop and choose the exit leading away from the city center to Museumstrasse. Alternatively, take tram 46 to the Auerspergstrasse stop just steps from the palace entrance.
When to get there
Palais Auersperg is open to the public exclusively for concerts and other cultural events. The easiest way to visit is by purchasing tickets to the nightly Mozart and Strauss concerts performed by the Vienna Residence Orchestra or to the traditional New Year’s Eve ball. Alternatively, check the venue’s calendar for upcoming musical performances.
Classical music concerts in Vienna’s palaces
Several former Imperial palaces are now used as magnificent venues for classical music performances in Vienna. In addition to the nightly concerts at Palais Auersperg, there are regular opera and orchestral performances held at Schoenbrunn Palace by the Schoenbrunn Palace Orchestra, plus orchestra concerts held regularly inside the wood-paneled hall at Eschenbach Palace.
