Philosopher's Walk

78 Queen’s Park Cres W., Toronto, ON, ON M5S 2C5

If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of downtown, make a beeline for Philosopher's Walk, a leafy path bordering Trinity College on the University of Toronto campus. Whether you take a book to read on a bench, or pack an alfresco lunch, Philosopher’s Walk is a lovely place to find a touch of nature in the city.

The Basics

As you pass through the Alexandra Gateway at the north end of Philosopher’s Walk, you can feel the city disappear. Happen upon the path while exploring the University of Toronto, or add it to your itinerary if you’re visiting the Royal Ontario Museum. For a full morning or afternoon, spend a couple of hours at the museum, then head to Philosopher’s Walk for a breath of fresh air after checking out the galleries.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Most of the University of Toronto campus is wheelchair-accessible.

  • If you’re lucky, you might catch a student theater group performing at the Philosopher’s Walk Amphitheatre.

How to Get There

Located on the University of Toronto’s St. George campus, Philosopher’s Walk is easiest to reach by subway. Take the 1 line to the Museum stop, and walk east past MacMillan Theatre until you see the park. Many hop-on hop-off bus tours also stop nearby at the Royal Ontario Museum.

When to Get There

For the warmest weather, go in late spring, summer, or early fall—Toronto winters are typically cold and snowy. The University of Toronto tends to be busiest in fall, when the students return.

Queen’s Park

Not far from Philosopher’s Walk, you’ll find the well-tended Queen’s Park. More than just an urban green space, the park is home to the Ontario Legislative Building. Stroll the manicured walkways, and don’t miss the numerous memorials and statues depicting historical figures, such as confederation fathers, heads of state, and even Queen Victoria.
