Quandary Peak
Breckenridge, CO, 80424
Part of the Camp Hale-Continental Divide National Monument and White River National Forest, Quandary Peak is a mountain summit with an elevation of 14,265 feet (4,347 meters). It’s one of Colorado’s many 14er peaks, though it’s considered one of the least technical. Quandary Peak is easily accessible by car and seasonal shuttle bus from downtown Breckenridge.
The basics
Just because locals consider Quandary Peak one of the least technical 14ers in the state doesn’t mean that it’s a walk in the park. The elevation change takes it above the timberline, meaning weather patterns can change instantly. Even in the summer, thunderstorms and lightning occur and the trail does not offer any refuge from the elements. It’s also one of the most popular trails in the area, so expect many hikers throughout the year.
Things to know before you go
Shuttle ride seating must be booked in advance.
Colorado residents receive free shuttle service.
Dogs are permitted on the shuttle.
How to get there
There are two ways to get to Quandary Peak: by car or shuttle bus. Between June and September, you need to reserve parking in advance or take the shuttle from Breckenridge. Though the shuttle doesn’t run outside of these months, parking is free and requires no reservation. Get to Quandary Peak taking I-70 to Exit 203 south onto Highway 9 then onto Blue Lakes Road.
When to get there
If you’re hiking during the summer months, Summit County recommends starting as early as possible to avoid summer thunderstorms. If hiking during cooler months, be aware that parking is first-come, first-served from mid-September through mid-June. The average hike time is six hours, so catch the shuttle by 10:30am at the latest.
Extend your hike on McCullough Gulch
If the six-hour hike up Quandary Peak leaves you wanting more, White River National Forest is home to the McCullough Gulch. This popular hiking trail has an average completion time of two hours, making it a relatively easy addition from the north side of Quandary Peak. It takes you down an old mining road to the McCullough Gulch drainage and a viewpoint of White Falls.
