Rainbow Falls
Great Smoky Mountains National Park, TN
Hilo’s Rainbow Falls is a real-life Hawaiian postcard. This waterfall sits at the top of the Wailuku River on the Big Island of Hawaii. As it cascades down, the mist and sun create rainbows near it at certain times of the day. Unlike other Hawaiian paradises, the paved trail up to it makes it accessible to almost anyone.
The basics
Many visitors go to Hawaii’s Rainbow Falls independently since it’s near downtown Hilo and has parking near the trail’s starting point. You might choose a guided tour with a stop at the falls as part of a more extensive tour of Hilo and its highlights. Many Big Island tours and Hilo shore excursions stop at Rainbow Falls for a quick walk up to the falls.
Things to know before you go
- You'll find free parking near the Rainbow Falls trailhead.
- Rainbow Falls trail is a paved path up to the falls, allowing access to those in wheelchairs.
- Swimming is not allowed at Rainbow Falls, but the river above the falls allows swimmers. If you swim, exercise care and don't swim when it’s raining or the water isn’t calm.
How to get there
Driving is the easiest way to get to Rainbow Falls. From Hilo, start by heading west on Waiānuenue Avenue. Then, turn right on Rainbow Drive. Follow the signs to the parking lot on the right-hand side. Then, get out and walk the trail up to the waterfall.
When to get there
The best time to visit Rainbow Falls in Hawaii is from April to June, when you can avoid the jam-packed summer months of July and August and still have good hiking opportunities. The best time to get to the falls is in the early morning when you’re more likely to see a rainbow at Rainbow Falls.
Explore another natural wonder
Check out Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, which is about 20 minutes by car from Hilo. This 17-acre (6.8-hectare) nature preserve boasts a 3-tier waterfall (Onomea Falls), an orchid garden with native and non-native species, and a statuesque carving of Kū, the Hawaiian god of war. You'll also learn some of the island's history at sites around the garden.
