Royal Alexandra Theatre
Toronto, ON
Dating back to 1907, The Royal Alexandra Theatre—nicknamed the “Royal Alex”—is a historic Edwardian-style venue known for its regal design and lavish interiors. A national historic landmark, it’s one of North America's oldest continuously operating theaters. Visitors come here for award-winning Broadway shows, musicals, and plays.
The basics
Many travelers visit the Royal Alexandra Theatre independently to watch performances, often prebooking tickets in advance to secure their preferred seats. Architecture enthusiasts also visit outside show times to admire its grandeur, while the theater sometimes features on guided walking tours of Toronto, as well as self-guided scavenger hunt games. The theater is a popular destination for diverse interests, thanks to its combination of historical significance, architecture grandeur, and entertainment.
Things to know before you go
- The venue is wheelchair-accessible with a barrier-free restroom.
- There is a bar on-site, so you can purchase drinks and snacks before the show.
- If you’re looking for a meeting place nearby, then the tree-lined plaza of David Pecaut Square is a good choice, with seating, a park, and water features.
How to get there
To reach the Royal Alexandra Theatre, which is located at 260 King Street West, take the subway to St. Andrew Station and walk west along King Street for around three minutes. Alternatively, streetcars 504A and 504B stop close to the theater. If driving, several parking garages are nearby but public transport is recommended.
When to get there
It’s best to get to the Royal Alexandra Theatre at least 30 minutes before your show starts to allow time for purchasing refreshments, finding your seat, and exploring the interiors of this magnificent venue. For popular sell-out shows—especially pre-Broadway runs—arriving earlier can help you avoid long lines. Weekday matinees and evening performances are less crowded than weekend shows.
What to do after the Royal Alexandra Theatre
If you’re looking for things to do after a daytime performance at the Royal Alexandra Theatre, Simcoe Park, the CN Tower, and Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada are around a 13-minute walk away. If you’ve opted for an evening performance, then great places to eat and drink nearby include PAI for Thai food, Minami Toronto for Japanese, and Smoke’s Poutinerie Adelaide for fast food.
