Royal Casino of Murcia (Real Casino de Murcia)
Carrer Trapería 18, Murcia, Menorca, 30001
A mighty façade, opulent halls, and a mix of architectural styles make the Royal Casino of Murcia (Real Casino de Murcia) one of the city’s most visually stunning attractions. The building for this private club dates back to 1847, and the way it showcases Spain’s various architectural periods has made it a top draw for history buffs.
The basics
While the Royal Casino of Murcia is a private building, the ground floor is open to the public, allowing you to see around 12 of its grand rooms and halls. An admission ticket comes with an audio guide and self-guided tours generally take up to 1.5 hours. Thanks to its stunning facade and convenient location, the casino is occasionally included on day tours from Cartagena that come to Murcia. However, they often only admire the exterior.
Things to know before you go
More of a private club than a traditional casino, there is no gaming or gambling available at the Royal Casino of Murcia.
The Royal Casino of Murcia has reciprocal agreements with certain international clubs for access to its member's rooms.
Despite its historic nature, the interior of the Royal Casino is fully accessible for people using wheelchairs and there is elevator access to its upper levels.
There is a restaurant at the Royal Casino of Murcia that you can dine at without membership; try to book ahead.
How to get there
The Royal Casino of Murcia is deep within the narrow pedestrian streets of Murcia’s Old Town, just up from the Cathedral of Murcia. If you’re already sightseeing in Murcia, walking should be the easiest way to get there. Otherwise, board the R14 or R18 and alight at the Plaza de Cetina bus stop a few minutes walk from the building. Day trippers coming by car will find parking lots orbiting the historical center.
When to get there
You can enter the public spaces of the Royal Casino daily during the day, but evening access is limited to members. The casino tends to be at its busiest during the middle of the day, especially around lunchtime thanks to its restaurant; wait until the afternoon to visit for a quieter experience.
Courts, halls, and rooms of the Royal Casino of Murcia
On your tour of the Royal Casino of Murcia, you’ll pass through a series of rooms, passages, and halls that each bear their own style. The Ballroom is the standout room thanks to its extremely lavish neo-Baroque design decked in gold. Other rooms couldn’t be more different—whether it’s the English Library, with its wealth of woodwork, or the Arabic Court decked out with delicate gold leaf and a neo-Nazarí design.
