Sand Key Reef
Key West, FL, 34429
Not far from Key West, Sand Key Reef is part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. A red, iron lighthouse built in1853 reigns over this Sanctuary Preservation Area, and the coral reef is within 1.5 meters (five feet) of the surface in some areas, making it an effortless site for snorkelers of all skill levels.
The basics
The diverse marine life in the Florida Keys entices many visitors to leave the shoreline behind, especially the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Sand Key Reef is a popular spot for diving, boating, and swimming, thanks to its proximity to Key West and clear waters. Most tours include a snorkeling session, though some may get creative with their options by offering light refreshments, photo ops, and sunset sailing.
Things to know before you go
Catch and release is legally permitted in these waters, but it’s illegal to keep anything you catch, including the invasive lionfish.
This marine sanctuary has no dry land to dock on, so be sure to bring extra sunscreen, fresh water, and any other necessities you may need while away from shore.
Take only photographs and leave only bubbles: there’s a strict rule against touching or taking any living or dead part of the coral reef.
How to get there
Sand Key Reef is approximately six miles (10 kilometers) southwest of Key West in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. The only way you can access this area is via private or chartered boat. Most people book a guided snorkeling, sailing, or diving tour from Key West, but you can ask for coordinates on land if you wish to sail your own boat to the sanctuary.
When to get there
The best time to visit the reef is between April and August, when visibility is at its clearest. However, these months are also peak season in the Florida Keys. If you don’t mind a slight decrease in water clarity, visiting Sand Key Reef during the winter months is ideal for a cooler, less crowded experience. Year-round, planning a trip earlier or later in the day spares you from the afternoon’s maximum sun exposure.
What to look for at Sand Key Reef
While the wildlife swimming around the reef is a stunning sight, keep your eyes peeled for a few features that weren’t originally part of this sanctuary. Before the red iron lighthouse was constructed in 1853, a brick lighthouse stood in its place. It was washed away by a storm in 1846, but you can still find evidence of this in the shallows.
