POINT OF INTEREST

Sandia Peak Tramway

30 Tramway Rd, Albuquerque, NM, 87122

The Sandia Peak Tramway whisks visitors to the top of the Sandia Mountains in just 15 minutes, scaling over 10,000 feet (3048 meters). Once aboard the tram, you’ll enjoy impressive panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and forests. An upscale restaurant at the top of the tramway draws visitors seeking dining with a view.

The basics

A journey on the Sandia Peak Tramway covers around three miles (almost five kilometers) from bottom to top, with views that stretch out over the aspen forests and mountains. While the tram ride and Ten 3 restaurant are key attractions, many visitors plan to explore the hiking trails here, too. Plan to spend half a day or more soaking up the views, snacking in the restaurant’s more casual bar, or settling in for a fine-dining experience. Sunset is a particularly beautiful time to ride this aerial tram.

Things to know before you go

  • There’s a significant temperature change from the city below to the top of the mountain; pack an extra layer to be prepared.

  • The tramway and decks at the top of the mountain are wheelchair accessible and strollers are permitted on the tram.

  • A gift shop offers New Mexico-themed gifts and souvenirs.

How to get there

Sandia Peak Tramway is located at 30 Tramway Road in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A parking lot, with access to both the tramway and hiking trails, is available here and many visitors arrive by private car. Public transportation from Albuquerque by bus is only available for part of the journey; if you take the bus, you’ll need to arrange a rideshare to reach the base of the tram.

When to get there

This tram is open every day except Tuesdays, from morning to late in the evening. The last passenger tram down the mountain varies by day, so check online for the latest details. Note that the tram and restaurant are closed for maintenance twice per year, so confirm opening ahead of time to avoid disappointment. The tram can also close at short notice due to inclement weather; if conditions aren’t good, do check the website for latest information.

Ten 3 restaurant

Named after the height of its location at 10,300 feet, Ten 3 restaurant is a dining destination with a serious view. Reservations are required for the dining room—be sure to arrive at the tramway at least 45 minutes ahead of your reservation—but the bar operates on a first-come, first-served basis and serves food. Here you can sample New Mexican-inspired fare with stellar views of the Sangre De Cristo mountains. Note that dining at the restaurant is only available for children aged 10 and older.
