SeaGlass Carousel
New York City, NY
New York City’s SeaGlass Carousel is an amusement ride like no other. Housed in a glass-paneled nautilus shell atop the original New York Aquarium site, the carousel whisks visitors away to a whimsical world under the sea, creating a magical convergence of art and entertainment enjoyed by locals and tourists.
The basics
Rather than riding traditional carousel horses, you'll sit inside 30 monumental fiberglass fish representing 12 different fish species. The carousel has no central pole. Instead, the walls transform from clear to blue, simulating a realistic trip to the ocean floor, and music plays in the background. The fish spin independently and swirl around each other as though swimming through the ocean. On the ride, you'll enjoy unobstructed views of the surrounding the Battery.
New York City walking tours covering Lower Manhattan often pass by or stop at SeaGlass Carousel.
Things to know before you go
Riders under 42 inches (107 centimeters) in height must ride on the lap of a supervising adult. Both children and accompanying parents need a ticket. Children under 12 months old may ride for free. SeaGlass offers two static fish that are ADA wheelchair accessible. Discounts are available for groups.
How to get there
The SeaGlass Carousel is easily accessible via the New York City Subway. The 1, R, and W subway trains stop at nearby South Ferry and Whitehall Street stations, just a few minutes walk away. Alternatively, it’s a 10-minute walk from Wall Street Station on the 2 and 3 lines. The Staten Island Ferry Terminal is also within a short walking distance.
When to get there
The carousel operates every day, year-round. Opening hours are generally from late morning until late evening but vary by season, so checking the website before heading out is a good idea. Typically, the carousel is least busy early in the day.
The Battery
The SeaGlass Carousel is located in the Battery (formerly known as Battery Park) at the southern tip of Manhattan, facing New York Harbor. The historic, 25-acre (10-hectare) space features landscaped gardens, a bike path, outdoor cafés, multiple monuments, and the 19th-century fort, Castle Clinton. As well as a tranquil spot for a stroll, the Battery is the gateway for cruises to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
