Senoia
Senoia, GA
A short jaunt south of Atlanta, the quiet suburb of Senoia has been a famous filming location for decades, mainly due to Riverwood Studios' presence. Films partially shot in and around Senoia include Fried Green Tomatoes and Driving Miss Daisy, and most of the hit TV series The Walking Dead was shot in town.
The basics
Senoia offers a smattering of things to do, from visiting small gift shops to learning about local history at the Senoia Area Historical Society. There are also plenty of annual events, from pub crawls to holiday celebrations. However, most travelers come to Senoia to see The Walking Dead shooting locations, and it's wise to go as part of a tour to see spots related to the show that you might otherwise miss.
Things to know before you go
Wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of sun protection, particularly if you're coming in the summer.
Some tours require a fair bit of walking, so it’s wise to check details before booking if you have mobility concerns. Most tours are wheelchair accessible.
Due to the paranormal nature of The Walking Dead, some tours may not be suitable for small children.
How to get there
Senoia is difficult to get to by public transportation—the only way to do it is by taking bus 180 to Roosevelt Highway and then taking a taxi the rest of the way. If you have a car, getting to Senoia usually takes just under an hour from Atlanta, depending on traffic. If you don’t, or if you want to maximize your chances of seeing The Walking Dead filming locations, you’re best off joining a tour.
When to get there
The best time to visit Senoia is during the spring when the weather is warm (but not sweltering) and rainfall is moderate. Plenty of events are tied to holidays in Senoia, including Mardi Gras and St. Patrick's Day celebrations, spooky Halloween events—perfect for Walking Dead fans—and an annual yuletide candlelight tour of beautiful local homes.
Hollywood of the South
In recent years, Atlanta has earned a reputation as the "Hollywood of the South." While The Walking Dead is undoubtedly one of the metropolitan area's most famous exports, there are plenty of filming sites worth visiting. Tours are available that will show you filming locations of the reality show Love & Hip Hop and supernatural drama Stranger Things, as well as films ranging from Fast & Furious to Captain America.
