Sheffield Island Lighthouse
Norwalk, CT, 06854
Perched at the southern end of the Norwalk Islands in Connecticut, the Sheffield Island Lighthouse offers magnificent views of the Long Island Sound and the New York City skyline on a clear day. Following a boat ride to the island, explore the historic attraction to learn more about the area’s maritime history and how lightkeepers lived.
The basics
In the summer, hop aboard a catamaran to cruise to Sheffield Island, where you can explore the lighthouse and keeper’s quarters independently or on a guided tour. The island is also home to part of the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge, where you can see a tidal saltwater pond home to belted kingfishers and egrets. Pack a lunch to enjoy on the lighthouse lawn or visit the on-site concession stand for refreshments.
Things to know before you go
There have been reports of paranormal activity on the island and the lighthouse is featured on ghost tours.
Coolers and bags must be able to fit beneath the seats on the boat.
The ferry usually has morning and afternoon departure times.
How to get there
Sheffield Island Lighthouse is only accessible via boat from Norwalk from May to September. The dock is at the intersection of North Water Street and Washington Street in historic South Norwalk. The Norwalk Seaport Association operates the ferries to and from the island. The trip lasts three hours, with about 1.5 hours on Sheffield Island.
When to get there
The ferry schedule varies throughout the season, so check departure dates and times and buy tickets before heading to the dock. Plan to arrive 30 minutes before scheduled departure. In July and August, the Norwalk Seaport Association hosts clambakes (a traditional New England way of cooking seafood) on Sheffield Island. Tickets include tours of the lighthouse.
The highlights of Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge
The Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge spans more than 1,000 acres (405 hectares) across Connecticut and is divided into 10 sections, one of which is on Sheffield Island. Many of the units boast nature trails, wildlife observation platforms, and other visitor facilities, and all are designed to protect the undeveloped coastal habitats that at-risk species call home.
