Shem Creek Park

Shrimp Boat Ln, Mount Pleasant, SC, 29464

Shem Creek Park connects a lively shopping and dining scene to the surrounding Lowcountry landscape. It’s best known for its 2,200-foot (670-meter) boardwalk stretching out across the marshes; it may give you the sense of walking on water while remaining close by to trendy restaurants and entertainment.

The basics

Step onto the boardwalk at Shem Creek Park and you might forget you’re just a stone’s throw away from downtown Charleston. Walk out over the marsh, stopping at information stations to learn about the history and ecology of the creek along the way, or sit at a pavilion and watch the fishing and shrimping boats come in. You can also visit with a guided tour that helps you learn more about the significance of Shem Creek to local culture and see how this vital ecosystem connects to the surrounding area. Tours available include biking, kayaking, and fishing trips.

Things to know before you go

  • Shem Creek Park is wheelchair-accessible and suitable for strollers.

  • There are numerous benches and places to sit throughout the park.

  • There are two parking lots: one next to the park that fits 35 cars, and a second spillover parking area on Shrimp Boat Lane.

  • Plan to spend about an hour strolling on the boardwalk, taking photos, and enjoying the view.

  • It’s not uncommon to spot bottlenose dolphins here at sunset.

  • Public restrooms are available.

  • The park is free and open to the public.

How to get there

If you’re coming from downtown Charleston, the fastest way to get to Shem Creek is by car—drive or hail a ride for the 12-minute trip. Parking can get busy here, so consider traveling by bus, bike, or rideshare to avoid the hassle of parking, especially during peak hours. Shem Creek makes for a great 35-minute bike ride on mostly flat and protected routes, including over the Ravenel Bridge, or a 45-minute bus ride on the 41. You can also take your own boat and tie it up at one of the floating docks.

When to get there

The park is typically open daily from 5am to 12am but is most popular at sunset. Plan to arrive at least an hour before sunset so you have time to park before it gets too crowded. Arrive early morning or evening to avoid the mid-afternoon heat in the summer months, as the park offers limited shade.

Where to watch the sunset in Charleston

Shem Creek Park may be one of the best places to catch a Charleston sunset, but it’s not the only place for views. Other options include the beaches at Folly or Isle of Palm, the formerly abandoned bridge-turned-park at Pitt Street, and the Battery for a spectacular downtown sunset.
