St. Helena’s Anglican Church
505 Church St, Beaufort, SC, 29902
One of the oldest active Christian churches in the US, St. Helena’s Anglican Church was built in 1724 and modified three times between then and 1824. The church has a rich history, including its use as a Union hospital in the Civil War, and showcases an array of 18th century artifacts.
The basics
St. Helena’s Anglican Church, not to be confused with the modern Parish Church of St. Helena across the street, is one of the earliest English sites established in Beaufort. Sunday services are open to the public and free to attend. You can also support the parish by shopping at Treasure House Thrift & More, the church’s thrift store. Some visitors, especially on weekdays, choose to learn about the church on a historical tour led by local guides: Walking, driving, golf cart, and carriage tours start around US$20.
Things to know before you go
Wear modest clothing when entering the church and graveyard.
Photos are permitted in the cemetery, but be respectful of mourners
Because of its age, the church isn’t fully accessible to wheelchair users.
How to get there
St. Helena’s Anglican Church is located at 505 Newcastle Street in downtown Beaufort, between King Street and Prince Street, directly across from St. Helena Graveyard. This original church is within the cemetery; the newer, active church is across the street. You can park on the streetside or find a larger parking lot two blocks south on Newcastle Street at the intersection of Bay Street.
When to get there
St. Helena’s Anglican Church has two Sunday services, typically at 8am and 10:30am. It also hosts weekly events for the parish, including fund raisers, Bible studies, and community programs. Arrive a few minutes early for events or services. You can call the office Monday through Friday to check if short tours are available if visiting when the church is closed.
Other historic sites in downtown Beaufort
Beaufort is full of historic buildings, many of which are a short walk from St. Helena’s Anglican Church. The Secession House, where the South discussed seceding from the Union, and the Tabby Manse, one of the oldest buildings in Beaufort, are two blocks away. Other Civil War and post-Civil War sites, including the Robert Smalls House and Reconstruction Era National Historical Park, are minutes away by foot or car.
