Staatsburgh State Historic Site
75 Mills Mansion Drive, Staatsburg, NY, 12580
Considered an icon of Gilded Age design and decadence, the Staatsburgh State Historic Site is one of the grandest historical estates located in New York’s Hudson River Valley. Formerly owned by financier and politician Ogden Mills and his wife, Ruth Livingston Mills, the sprawling mansion is known for its Beaux-Arts architecture and its well-preserved, lavishly decorated interiors.
The basics
Billed as one of the Hudson Valley’s cultural gems, the Staatsburgh State Historic Site represents an extraordinary opportunity to step back in time to the Gilded Age: When it was donated to the state in 1938, its interiors were left exactly the way they were when the Mills family resided in the home. On a guided tour, you’ll learn exactly what life was like in the era when you tour the dining room, ballroom, kitchen, and other notable areas of the house.
Don’t miss the chance to continue your visit outside. With a location right overlooking the Hudson River and views of the Catskill Mountains in the distance, Staatsburgh’s 192-acre grounds are a popular destination for walkers. And if you happen to visit on a snowy day, bring your sled: The lawn in front of the house is a popular local sledding hill.
Things to know before you go
The Staatsburgh State Historic Site is partly accessible to wheelchair users, including its basement and main ground-floor space.
Don’t miss the chance to explore the gift shop: It’s consistently rated as one of the best gift shops in the region.
Tours are only held by request and must be reserved online in advance; pay upon arrival.
Children aged 12 and under can visit the landmark for free, while students and seniors receive discounted entry.
The Staatsburgh State Historic Site is included in the Empire Pass card scheme, which offers a cost-saving way to visit many of New York State’s landmarks.
