Starr Hill Brewery
5391 Three Notched Road, Crozet, Virginia, VA, 22932
The second-oldest craft brewery in Virginia—and still independently owned and operated today—Starr Hill Brewery has been a leading beer pioneer since its founding in 1999. From its current headquarters near the Blue Ridge Mountains, it produces an eclectic range of award-winning ales and lagers, and its taproom is a destination for local and visiting beer lovers.
The basics
Founded in the early days of the craft beer revolution, Starr Hill Brewery has consistently made some of Old Dominion’s finest brews in its more than 20 years of existence. Today, locals and visitors flock to its Crozet taproom to sample its range of year-round and seasonal releases and one-off pilot brews.
But the beer isn’t the only attraction at Star Hill. The brewery’s taproom hosts regular events throughout the week, from trivia nights to bingo games, while its longstanding connection to music—it was founded in Charlottesville’s former Starr Hill Music Hall—sees it host live performances every weekend, complete with guest food trucks. Its proximity to Charlottesville and its satellite locations across the state help make the brewery a popular year-round destination.
Things to know before you go
Leashed dogs are welcome at Starr Hill’s taproom, but only in its patio area.
For a budget-friendly option, visit on Mondays and Tuesdays, when the brewery offers an all-day happy hour with discounts on draft and to-go beer.
If you’re not near Crozet, Starr Hill also operates locations in Charlottesville, Lynchburg, Roanoke, and Richmond, plus an open-air Biergarten in Tysons.
You must be at least 21 years old to drink at Starr Hill Brewery, and guardians must accompany minors.
How to get there
Starr Hill Brewery’s headquarters and taproom are at 5391 Three Notch’d Rd. in Crozet, Virginia. The nearest hub to the brewery is Charlottesville, located roughly 30 minutes east via US-250 W (or around 1 hour if taking the CROZ-E shuttle bus).
When to get there
Starr Hill Brewery’s primary location is open daily, from mid-afternoon until evening, Monday to Thursday, and from midday to evening, Friday to Sunday. It has a busy events calendar, and it’s worth seeing what’s on before you visit. Note that the hours for its other locations vary.
The Brew Ridge Trail
Starr Hill Brewery is one of a handful of breweries and cider producers that together make up the Brew Ridge Trail, roughly following the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s worth exploring with a designated driver to visit other notable stops like the Blue Mountain Barrel House and Devils Backbone Brewing Company and admire the region’s dramatic scenery.
