Stephen King’s House

47 W Broadway, Bangor, ME, 04401

Stephen King, the iconic American horror author, lived at this residence in Bangor, Maine, from 1980 until late 2023. When King and his wife relocated permanently to Florida, the house was repurposed into an archive of his work, a retreat for select writers, and headquarters for the Stephen & Tabitha King Foundation. It is not open for tours or to the general public.

The basics

The historic mansion was built in the 1850s with Victorian, Queen Anne, and Italianate architectural styles, which lend its spooky vibes. Its blood-red color only adds to the ambiance. Unfortunately, fans can’t go inside and envision the haunts that were thought up in this house. While it does put a damper on the visit, fans of the author should consider this just one of many Stephen King-themed spots to visit on a tour of Bangor.

Things to know before you go

  • No formal street parking is available.

  • The tree carving was commissioned by Tabitha King.

  • You can take photos and videos from outside of the gate.

How to get there

Stephen King’s former home, which is now the site of the Stephen & Tabitha King Foundation, is located in Bangor’s Whitney Park Historic District. Hammond Street/US Route 2 is the main route through Bangor. Turn northeast from US Route 2 onto Cedar Street; the house is at the end of the road.

When to get there

Don’t rush to visit Stephen King’s former home in Bangor: The offices of the Stephen & Tabitha King Foundation belong on private property in a residential area. Visit during the daylight to see the wrought iron gate with bats and spiders, but be mindful not to disturb the employees or surrounding residents.

Stephen King didn’t just live in Bangor—he and subsequent filmmakers found inspiration around the city. Mount Hope Cemetery on State Street was a filming location for Pet Sematary. Meanwhile, King took inspiration from the Thomas Hill Standpipe and the storm drain at the corner of Union Street and Jackson Street when writing It.
