Strawbery Banke Museum
14 Hancock St, Portsmouth, NH, 03801
This living history and interpretive museum preserves a Portsmouth neighborhood’s evolution from its colonial origins in the 1600s through the mid-1900s. Although the Strawbery Banke Museum showcases the history of the city’s past from the colonial era onward, this site has seen human presence for over 12,000 years, beginning with the Abenaki people.
The basics
The Strawbery Banke Museum is much more of an engaging, interactive experience than a typical museum with static exhibits. Historic houses, most in their original sites, are filled with antiques and costumed actors portraying real people who lived in this neighborhood over the centuries. You’re encouraged to speak with these role-players and even help with immersive activities like weaving and hearth cooking. Seasonal events like livestock appearances, concert series, wine festivals, ghost tours, and candlelight strolls take place throughout the year.
Things to know before you go
Pre-colonial archaeological findings are held in the Collections Department.
Guided tours of the heirloom gardens are only available on weekends in the summer.
Some areas may be off-limits for private events.
How to get there
Walking trails from Prescott Park in Portsmouth lead to the Strawbery Banke Museum’s property. The closest bus station is at the Langdon House, a 5-minute walk from the museum. There is a dedicated parking lot for general admission, but on days when there are special events, on-site parking is unavailable.
When to get there
Year-round events are on offer here, but the entire attraction doesn’t keep annual hours. For example, the historic houses are only open between April and October (and for select special dates), while the Labrie Family Skate rink at Puddle Dock Pond has seasonal outdoor ice skating. If you’re visiting during general admission days, plan to spend one to two hours; special event days may require extra time to fully engage with the site.
Annual Ice Dance International shows
While the museum is engaging for all audiences, it leans more toward history lovers. However, the annual Ice Dance International (IDI) residency brings a more modern event to the museum space. Puddle Dock Pond hosts IDI each year. The program includes pop-up performances, classes, and one-on-one skating opportunities for people with disabilities.
