Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail
Sugarland Valley Accessible Trail, Gatlinburg, TN, 37738
An easy trail for any visitor to Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains National Park, this half-mile (0.8-kilometer) loop takes trekkers along a paved, flat forest walkway with views of towering trees, roaring streams, and historic stone chimneys. This route is ideal for those who want to see the wonders of the Great Smoky Mountains up close without tackling the park’s more challenging trails.
The basics
The best way to visit the Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail is to arrive independently at a time that suits you—there is a small parking area along Newfound Gap Rd (US 411). Park and head across to the trailhead to begin the trail. If you just want to take in the views from your car, you can book a self-guided audio tour that drives past the area and through other parts of the national park, too.
Things to know before you go
The nearby Sugarlands Visitor Center has restrooms.
Because of the ease of this trail, it is a great pick for families with younger children and is also wheelchair- and stroller-accessible.
Keep in mind that bears are in the national park, so stay aware.
No dogs are allowed on this trail.
How to get there
To get to the Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail, start by driving south on US 441 (Newfound Gap Road)—you will reach the trailhead on the left after about 0.4 miles (0.64 kilometers) from the Sugarlands Visitor Center. There is parking for about 12 cars, so there will usually be a space to park unless it is a busy day at the trail. Be aware that parking is paid through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park parking tag program.
When to get there
Although the Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail is open year-round to visitors, you may want to avoid the winter and early spring if you don’t want to visit when snow is on the ground. Summer is a great time weather-wise, but is also the busiest time. Fall can be quieter and can offer decent weather for outdoor activities.
Visit some of the Quiet Walkways trails
While inside the Smoky Mountains National Park, take the time to stop at a few of the 14 hidden-gem trails known as the Quiet Walkways. These trails are marked throughout the park with small brown signs with white lettering and, like the Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail, offer beautiful views of nature via easy routes.
