SUMMIT One Vanderbilt
45 E 42nd St., New York City, NY, 10017
Overlooking the city from the top of one of midtown Manhattan’s highest skyscrapers, SUMMIT One Vanderbilt offers an innovative, uniquely immersive experience. Spread across three levels, the observation deck is outfitted with mirrored surfaces that reflect the cityscape in new dimensions, as well as interactive art exhibitions and multiple viewing areas that seem to defy the laws of physics.
The basics
Set 1,100 feet (336 meters) above Grand Central Station, SUMMIT One Vanderbilt provides more than just a bird’s-eye view of New York City—with its dimension-defying installations and digital art exhibitions, it’s unlike any other observation deck in the city.
After boarding the elevator to the 91st floor, your visit begins with Air: a multi-level, mirrored installation by day that transforms into a light show by night. You can also engage with Reflect, a work by artist Yayoi Kusama, as well as put your courage to the test when you step out onto the enclosed-glass platforms (called Levitation) or go even higher with Ascent (the world’s largest glass-bottomed exterior elevators). Afterwards, admire open-air views from the wraparound terrace, or head to the Nordic-themed Après to unwind over light refreshments.
Things to know before you go
It’s best to buy your tickets online in advance; various packages are available, and New York residents receive a discounted rate.
Bring sunglasses with you, since the reflective surfaces can be very bright on a sunny day.
Be sure to wear comfortable shoes: Stilettos and any other footwear that may scratch the mirrored floors are strictly forbidden.
SUMMIT One Vanderbilt is fully accessible to wheelchair users.
There’s a gift shop on-site.
How to get there
SUMMIT One Vanderbilt is located at 45 East 42nd Street in Manhattan. Entrances are located through the Transit Hall in One Vanderbilt (at the corner of Vanderbilt Avenue and 43rd Street), at 45 East 42nd Street, or via the Main Concourse Level of Grand Central Terminal. You can get there on the 4, 5, 6, 7 and S subway lines, the Long Island Railroad, and other trains to Grand Central; Times Square-42nd Street is also just blocks away.
When to get there
SUMMIT One Vanderbilt is open daily, from morning to late night; last entry is 90 minutes before closing time, and visits often run that long. The most popular times to go are at sunset and nighttime, when booking in advance is strongly suggested.
NYC’s best observation decks
New York City is a place of record-breaking skyscrapers—complete with a range of awe-inspiring observation decks to choose from. Head to the Empire State Building or the Top of the Rock to go with a classic; enjoy the highest outdoor viewing deck in the Western hemisphere at The Edge; or head 102 stories up in less than a minute at the One World Observatory.
Ways to explore
SUMMIT One Vanderbilt is a timed-entry experience, so it’s best to book tickets in advance—especially for sunset slots or busy weekends. Standard admission includes access to all three floors. Some ticket options also include a digital photo package, an expert guide, or a signature cocktail at the rooftop bar.
You can visit on your own or as part of a combo tour that includes other Midtown landmarks such as Grand Central Terminal, the Chrysler Building, or Bryant Park. SUMMIT access is also available through some NYC sightseeing passes.
Accessibility
All levels of SUMMIT One Vanderbilt are fully wheelchair accessible. Service animals are welcome, though caution is advised on mirrored or glass floors as some animals may react adversely. Guests requiring sighted guides or ASL interpreters should submit a request at least three weeks in advance.
Age limits
None; children 5 and under can enter for free.
What to pack
Sunglasses (the mirrored floors can reflect a lot of light), portable charger, credit card (cashless venue)
What to wear
You’ll want comfortable shoes with grip—mirrored floors and glass walkways can feel disorienting. Stiletto heels, steel-toe boots, and sports cleats are not permitted. Some areas are open-air and can be chilly, so wear layers.
Not allowed
Outside food or drink, large bags (larger than a standard backpack), tripods, drones
Amenities
Restrooms (located on the top floors), free Wi-Fi, gift shop, on-site café and lounge with skyline views
