POINT OF INTEREST

Sunset Plaza

8591-8720 W Sunset Blvd, Hollywood, CA, 90069

Stretching over two blocks of West Hollywood’s famed Sunset Strip, Sunset Plaza is a see-and-be-seen shopping center with around 50 businesses. Some come for designer shopping, hot Pilates, or Botox and a blowout, while others prefer to people-watch at one of several sidewalk cafés. Stick around for a bit, and you’ll likely see a star from Selling Sunset—or at least some very flashy cars.

The basics

With plenty of outdoor dining and a variety of galleries and boutiques you can explore on foot, Sunset Boulevard is one of LA’s more walkable destinations. Pretend you’re in Europe and wander the palm-lined street between Doheny Drive and La Cienega Boulevard, popping into Sunset Plaza’s shops and salons at your leisure.

Guided tours are the best way to see Sunset Plaza and surrounding areas in a limited time. Hop on a tour coach to cruise past the shopping center and LA landmarks like the Hollywood Sign and Rodeo Drive, or see it with a private driver who can show you celebrity mansions and hidden gems in the Hollywood Hills.

Things to know before you go

  • Sunset Plaza is on a flat, smooth stretch of Sunset Boulevard with accessible sidewalks.

  • The shopping center’s pricey boutiques won’t be of much interest to kids, but the area has a variety of cafés and sightseeing opportunities for family-friendly entertainment.

  • Come hungry—the shopping center’s dining options range from sushi and seafood to Brazilian and all-day brunch.

  • If you need to tick something off your to-do list while traveling, Sunset Plaza has handy services like workout studios and nail salons.

How to get there

Sunset Plaza is located in West Hollywood near the intersection of Sunset and La Cienega Boulevards. While it’s best to drive there (and park in the free spots behind the shopping center), it’s a convenient stop on the Metro 2 bus, which travels along Sunset Boulevard past attractions like the trendy Silver Lake neighborhood and the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

When to get there

The outdoor Sunset Plaza is a great place to soak up LA’s lovely weather—at its best in the spring and fall when temperatures hover in the 60s and 70s. For the best atmosphere, visit Sunset Plaza at lunchtime or in the late afternoon, when all the shops are open and outdoor tables are filled with locals and visitors.

Step back in time on Sunset Boulevard

Near Sunset Plaza are many of Sunset Boulevard’s most storied locales. Historic venues range from comedy clubs like the Laugh Factory and Comedy Store—where celebrity comedians make surprise appearances—to live music favorites such as Whisky a Go Go and the Roxy Theatre. After catching a show, fuel up at the Rainbow Bar & Grill, a go-to for rockstars in the ‘70s and ‘80s, or Carney’s Restaurant, a hot dog and burger joint inside an old train car.
