Sunsphere
810 Clinch Ave, Knoxville, TN, 37902
Resembling a large golden disco ball perched on a giant scaffold, the Sunsphere is one of the more popular attractions in Knoxville, famed for its 360-degree views stretching out to the Great Smoky Mountains. This 26-story structure was built for the 1982 World’s Fair and has been the quirkiest feature of Knoxville’s skyline ever since.
The basics
While most visitors to Knoxville spot the Sunsphere from a distance, whether visiting the city independently or checking out the lay of the land on a scavenger hunt or city tour, it’s worth making time to go inside the structure and enjoy its panoramic views. An elevator leads to the fourth floor, from where you see the city below, the Tennessee River, the University of Tennessee campus, and the Great Rocky Mountains. There’s also information signs offering insight into the Sunsphere’s interesting and varied history.
Things to know before you go
There is no public parking at the Sunsphere, but there are plenty of lots nearby.
The Sunsphere is wheelchair-accessible via ramp access and an elevator up to the observation deck.
You can purchase tickets to the observation deck in advance online; if buying on the day, note that purchase is via a QR code you scan with your phone at the base of the Sunsphere.
How to get there
The Sunsphere is located in the World’s Fair Park, about a 10-minute walk from Market Square in downtown Knoxville. Most people visit on foot or by driving to the area and parking nearby. If you're coming by public transit, you can take bus 81 to the Clinch Avenue WB after Henley Street stop.
When to get there
The Sunsphere is open Monday to Saturday from morning until afternoon, with reduced hours on Sundays and on select public holidays. It’s closed on Christmas and Thanksgiving. The observation deck closes daily for one hour over lunchtime every day except Sunday.
The World’s Fair Park
The Sunsphere sits inside the World's Fair Park, one of the more popular venues in town for relaxation and festivities alike, especially during the warmer months. Highlights include jogging and cycling paths, picnic spots, and plenty of grassy areas. It's a particularly great place for families—there’s a playground and a seasonal splash pad where kids can cool off on hot summer days.
