Television City
7800 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA, 90036
Built in 1952, CBS Television City in Los Angeles was one of the first and largest buildings dedicated solely to TV production and broadcasting, helping LA claim its fame as the home of American television creation. Its historic, cultural, and fun studios still film popular shows such as Dancing with the Stars, American Idol, and Real Time with Bill Maher.
The basics
Filming takes place at the CBS Television City building Monday through Friday, and you can sometimes catch a taping if you’re in the area. Most times, however, you’ll want to get admission tickets to a show ahead of your visit. If you’re just looking to see the historic studios, you can always join one of the Los Angeles Fairfax District walking tours that often stop by CBS Television City, as well as other city highlights, such as the Original Farmers Market and the Grove shopping center.
Things to know before you go
- If you’re looking to see a taping of a specific show filmed at CBS Television Studios for free, then make sure to check on the show’s website for more information. When shows are in season, they usually tape twice per week.
- If you don’t want to visit the attraction on your own, hop on the double-decker, green Grove Trolley and see CBS Television City from afar.
- Walt Disney Studios and Warner Bros. Studios are both in Burbank, which is just a 20-minute drive from the Fairfax District of Los Angeles.
How to get there
There’s parking nearby for travelers wanting to brave the roads in Los Angeles—you can park at the Grove shopping area or at Gate A if you already have show tickets. If you’re looking to take public transport, Los Angeles bus lines 14/37, 217, 218, and DASH all drop off near CBS Television City. If taking the subway, use the B Line to get to the studio.
When to get there
If you have scheduled show tickets to watch a taping and are driving yourself there, make sure to get there about thirty minutes ahead of time to leave time to find parking and walk to the proper area of CBS Television City. If you’re just going to see it and want to avoid crowds, try for a visit that isn’t in the summertime.
Movie fanatics shouldn’t miss Universal Studios Hollywood
The popular filming studio and theme park is just a short 15-minute drive from CBS Television City and features fun attractions for all ages. From Harry Potter and Jurassic Park to Despicable Me, popular movies and franchises are on full display through rides, shows, and other attractions. It’s worth at least a day’s visit to the park for families and film buffs.
