Tempelhofer Feld
Tempelhofer Damm, Berlin, Germany, 12101
Berlin’s Tempelhofer Feld (Tempelhof Park) is one of the world’s largest and most extraordinary urban parks. With a history that dates to the 13th-century Knights Templar, the park was later turned into a Nazi–era airport and concentration camp, and used during the Allied Airlift following World War II. Today, it’s a vast space for relaxation and recreation.
The basics
Decommissioned as an airport in 2008 and reborn as a public park in 2010, Berlin's Tempelhofer Feld is now the largest green space in the city, which is popular with both residents and tourists alike. There are so many ways to enjoy this unusual public space: soar down its endless runways with fellow skaters, skateboarders, and even windsurfers; delve into its past by walking the park’s History Trail, or discovering the airport and its grounded planes; or sit back and relax with a drink in the dedicated biergarten.
Tempelhof Feld features on a number of sightseeing itineraries, including Berlin city tours, WWII history tours, and excursions through the trendy neighboring Neukölln district. Explore with a guide to learn more about its history and highlights.
Things to know before you go
Tempelhof Feld’s three main entrances are all barrier-free and accessible to wheelchair users, as are all of its bathrooms.
As much of the park is open to the elements with little cover, it’s best to bring hats and sun protection with you on hot days.
Motorbikes and mopeds are not permitted in the park.
Cyclists and skaters should be attentive to fellow visitors and pedestrians.
There are nature conservation areas located in the park; be mindful not to disturb any protected habitats.
The park is free for all to visit.
How to get there
Tempelhof Feld is located in southern Berlin, near the Neukölln district. To get there via public transportation, take S-Bahn lines S41/S42/S47 to Tempelhof, or U-Bahn line U6 to Tempelhof or Paradestraße, or U-Bahn line U8 to Leinestraße or Boddinstraße. The M43 bus also stops nearby.
When to get there
Tempelhof Feld is open daily, though its hours are seasonal; typically it opens early in the morning and closes late in the evening during the summer, with earlier closing in winter. Aim to visit on a bright, dry day to make the most of the space.
Berlin’s best public parks
Tempelhof may be Berlin’s biggest public park, but it’s not the only one worth exploring. Other highlights include the elegant Volkspark Friedrichshain, Berlin’s oldest public park; Tiergarten, Berlin’s answer to New York’s Central Park; and Mauerpark, which still features a section of the Berlin Wall and hosts a lively flea market.
