The Last Bookstore
453 S Spring St., Los Angeles, CA, 90013
From humble beginnings in a downtown LA loft, the Last Bookstore has grown to become California’s largest independent bookstore. Occupying a former bank, the giant, 22,000-square foot (2,043-square-meter) high-ceilinged complex houses thousands of new and used titles, as well as vinyl records, unique art, and even yarn.
The basics
The Last Bookstore is a paradise for bibliophiles who could easily spend a day perusing the shelves, flipping through pages while seated in a comfy chair, and exploring the store’s whimsical book-themed design details and sculptures. Start on the first floor, where you can check out the book and record collection—be sure to enter the original bank vault, which holds the crime section—then make your way upstairs to the mezzanine for photo opportunities that include a quirky tunnel of books and to shop for one-of-a-kind pieces by the store’s artists in residence. Culture- and art-focused tours of downtown Los Angeles typically include a quick photo stop at the Last Bookstore.
Things to know before you go
- The Last Bookstore is wheelchair accessible; the owner is himself a wheelchair user.
- You can shop for new books through the Last Bookstore’s website, but used and collectible books are only available in the store.
- The bookstore has appeared in several movies, including “Gone Girl,” and is available for private photoshoots and venue rentals.
- The mezzanine level has a back room of 100,000 books selling for $1 each.
How to get there
The closest Metro station is Pershing Square, two blocks from the bookstore and on the Red/Purple Line. If you are driving, you’ll find metered street parking on both sides of Spring and 5th Streets (usually free in the evening and on Sundays). Pay parking lots can be found at the corner of 4th and Spring.
When to get there
The Last Bookstore is open seven days a week, from late morning until late evening. The store hosts regular readings, book signings, and other events, so check the website. If you want to sell your used books, the buy counter hour is open every day from mid-morning to early evening.
Arts & rare book annex
A gated room inside the Last Bookstore is dedicated to collectibles, fine art books, and books signed by the author. New buyers and serious collectors can find rare and collectible books here, including much sought-after first editions—the store once sold a signed, limited-edition copy of Jack Kerouac's "Visions of Cody" for $2,300.
