POINT OF INTEREST

Tivoli Gardens

Vesterbrogade 3, Copenhagen, Denmark, 1630

Opened in 1843 in Copenhagen, Tivoli Gardens is the second-oldest amusement park in the world and one of the best-known in Europe—it even served as a model for Disneyland®. And nearly two centuries later, the park is still working its magic, with a lively mix of attractions, gardens, and restaurants, and the family-friendly appeal of its quaint charm.

The basics

Tivoli Gardens is a wildly popular seasonal theme park, with rides and attractions that appeal to adults and children alike. It is home to one of the world’s tallest chain carousels, the Himmelskibet, and a popular wooden roller coaster called the Rutschebanen. You can also visit Villa Vendetta, its haunted house. For incredible views over the park, ride the hot-air balloon Ferris wheel.

Buy advance Tivoli Gardens entry tickets online to save time standing in line. Alternatively, purchase the Copenhagen Card, which includes admission to Tivoli and dozens of other Copenhagen sights. Many city sightseeing tours, walking tours, or bus tours also stop nearby. You can additionally purchase an Unlimited Rides Pass, which lets you visit numerous rides without booking individual entry.

Things to know before you go

  • Please note that Tivoli Gardens tickets do not include ride entry. You can purchase individual tickets, but an unlimited rides package may be a better deal.

  • Tivoli is very wheelchair- and stroller-friendly.

  • Lockers are available to stash extra belongings during your visit.

  • Download the free Tivoli App to make exploring the amusement park easier.

  • If you’re feeling hungry, head to the Tivoli Food Hall—a gastronomic destination in its own right.

How to get there

The amusement park is located right next to Copenhagen Central Station, making it easily accessible by train from all over Denmark. You can also easily get there by taxi or rideshare service—or visit as part of a Tivoli Gardens tour.

When to get there

Tivoli Gardens is open seasonally between April and September. It also opens for special occasions such as Halloween, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and a few weeks in February. The holiday season is one of the most magical times to experience the theme park: It offers special performances, fireworks displays, and one of the best Christmas markets in Scandinavia. During the summer there are concerts on Friday evenings (Friday Rock) and fireworks on Saturdays.

Tivoli Gardens for kids

Tivoli Gardens has several attractions that are great for kids, including marching and musical performances by the Tivoli Youth Guard. Many rides are kid-friendly, such as the Minimorgana mini-bumper cars, the Flying Trunk ride, and the Little Dragon interactive carousel. Tivoli has family amenity rooms throughout the park, and there are numerous eateries with children’s menus nearby.

Ways to explore

Highlights of Tivoli Gardens include the Star Flyer, one of Europe’s tallest chain carousels, and a popular wooden roller coaster that’s been running since the early 20th century. For incredible views over the park, ride the hot-air balloon Ferris wheel.
