Tranquility Park

The basics

A unique, green oasis in the city of Houston, Tranquility Park was designed to represent the cratered lunar surface, with craters and mounds that mimic the topography of the moon. The park also is decorated with water fountains that resemble the rocket boosters that propelled the Apollo missions.

Situated right in downtown Houston near City Hall, it’s the perfect retreat from the bustling energy of Texas’ urban powerhouse. Tranquility Park also hosts annual events such as the Children’s Festival, Houston International Festival, and many more.

Things to know before you go

• Tranquility Park honors Houston’s space legacy. Look out for plaques at the entrance immortalizing astronaut Neil Armstrong’s words in several languages.

• This park is especially popular during the hot summer months, when it offers shade and calm in the bustling downtown area.

• Walk to the north of the park to see memorials to the astronauts who lost their lives on the Space Shuttle Columbia, the Apollo 1 launch test, and Challenger Space Shuttle.

How to get there

Tranquility Park is located between Walker and Rusk streets, next to Houston’s City Hall and Central Library in the downtown district. The park itself is on top of an underground parking structure; on-street and lot parking is available for drivers. You can also take public transit to the park. Buses serve the adjacent Smith Street stop, and the light rail Green and Purple lines stop at the Theater District.

When to get there

Houston is a city that can be visited year-round due to its warm climate. However, the best time to go is during the fall or spring season when the humidity and heat levels are lower. During this time, you can enjoy outdoor activities, such as exploring the city’s parks and gardens. Additionally, the area is prone to hurricanes during the summer and fall season, so it is best to avoid these months if possible.

Wortham Fountain

Wortham Fountain dominates Tranquillity Park. Large stainless steel cylinders—representing the Apollo rocket’s built-in boosters—tower over cascades and pools. The design underscores Houston's dedication to remembering the Apollo 11 mission, which culminated in US astronaut Neil Armstrong becoming the first person to walk on the moon. The park is named after the area of the moon where Armstrong took his steps, the Sea of Tranquillity, and a replica of his footprint is also on display.
